Day 1 (well, it’s really half a day)
Arrival at base camp
Our adventure begins with ground transportation to base camp at the trailhead, in the small town of La Ciénaga (1,100 m / 3,609 ft.).
There, after meeting our guides, we’ll have a brief orientation talk as well as a review of the trip itinerary and gear list. We’ll enjoy dinner and afterwards we’ll turn in for the night in order to be well-rested for our next day’s hike.
Day 2
Hike to Valle del Tetero
Hiking: 19K (11.8 mi) • Elevation gain 1,180 m / 3,871 ft. • Elevation loss 680 m / 2,231 ft.
After a tasty breakfast at base camp we’ll start our 19K (11.8 mi) hike to Valle del Tetero. The 19K are divided as follows: 4K (2.5 mi) flat, 7.5K (4.65 mi) uphill and 7.5K (4.65 mi) downhill. When we arrive at the valley, a refreshing dip in the river’s cool crisp waters, a scrumptious meal in front of a cozy campfire and stories shared under countless stars will help us recover from the day’s hike.
Day 3
Rest day
Enjoy an entire day relaxing in the valley, with no hikes and no worries. After a delicious breakfast, visit La Piedra Taína –an ancient Taíno petroglyph–, take a stroll in the valley, and enjoy diving in the crystal-clear waters of La Ballena, all part of a once in a lifetime day off. At night, relax by the campfire reading your favorite book, lay in the middle of the valley watching countless stars and get a glimpse of the Milky Way.
Day 4
Return to base camp
Hiking: 19K (11.8 mi) • Elevation gain 680 m / 2,231 ft. • Elevation loss 1,180 m / 3,871 ft.
The 19K (11.8 mi) hike down from Valle del Tetero to base camp in La Ciénaga will be rewarded with a warm typical lunch and a cold river bath, the perfect farewell to an unforgettable trip.
